Sewer system capacity is increasingly constrained by reduced hydraulic headroom caused by groundwater infiltration, climate change, CSO and growing operational demands. This leads to inefficient use of existing infrastructure and, in critical situations, increased hydraulic loading of WWTPs with potential impacts on treatment performance. Current control strategies are often based on static rules and limited use of real-time data, resulting in suboptimal capacity utilization.
The project develops and demonstrates data-driven smart control of sewer system capacity by
combining targeted sensor deployment, measurement-based models, and an open and scalable integration framework. The solution will be
implemented and evaluated in the catchment of Aarhus South connected to Viby WWTP and designed for transferability across the water sector.
