“Live from behind the walls” presents a platform where AU researchers and research project partners from industry and academia can present their work. Potentially, students can also present their projects. The format is a two-hour online event with presentations of 10–20 mins. ORBIT Lab organizes the events. 

Bridging the gap between industry and academia

Professor, Peter Gorm Larsen, who is also the newly appointed head of the software and computing systems section at the Department of ECE, is behind the concept. He hopes to contribute to debunking some of the misconceptions surrounding the relationship between the research that takes place “behind the walls” of AU and the industry’s innovation. He explains:

“We have often heard that there is a lack of transparency as to what goes on behind the walls of AU and that the gap between research in technology and industry application is wide.” 

He hopes that these events will contribute to a better understanding of what takes place “behind the walls” – at least in the area of digital research and innovation. Even though he disagrees that the gap is wide:

“In our department, we have a solid track record of collaboration with both industry and the public sector. The research that takes place the Department of ECE lays the foundation for digital transformation projects in both industry and academia.”

Apart from his new role as section head, Peter Gorm Larsen teaches and supervises engineering students at master level. He coordinates several research projects (e.g. HUBCAP and INTO-CPS) as well as other externally funded projects. He leads AU DIGIT and AU Centre for Digital Twins and is also involved with the new Digital Transformation Lab in the municipality of Ringkøbing Skjern. Before his academic career, he had a long career in industry. 

Speakers and topics

Peter Gorm Larsen will host these online events. The program for the first event includes talks from various project partners, e.g. Raytheon Technologies Research Center, University of Pisa and Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The topics will cover cyber-physical systems, digital twins, co-simulations, UniFMU (Universal Functional Mock-Up Unit) and a talk about “The ORBIT Lab approach”, by Kasper Løvborg Jensen, Head of ORBIT Lab and Professor (docent) at the Department of ECE.

The technical readiness level (TRL) decreases throughout the program, and participants are welcome to select the most relevant talks. To start with, the events will mainly feature projects from the software section at the Department. In time, projects from other research areas within the department could potentially be included. There will be appx. 6 events this year, and the concept proves successful, there will be up to 12 events in 2022.

The first online event in the series will take place on February 23rd at 2 pm CET. Everyone is welcome. Register via ORBIT Lab’s website.
