Award-winning AI expert appointed as professor at Aarhus University
Alexandros Iosifidis is a new professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he will be continuing his research as one of Denmark's leading machine learning and artificial intelligence experts.
The world is experiencing a digital transformation of epic proportions. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are the focal point of this automation revolution, which has huge perspectives for the global community and even for the future of humanity on our planet.
Alexandros Iosifidis is one of Denmark's leading AI and machine learning researchers, and he has just been appointed professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aarhus University at the age of only 37 years.
"Machine learning and AI are areas in very high growth, and automatic, intelligent systems will play a much larger role in society and in our daily lives in the future. Our research primarily focuses on new techniques and methodologies that enable machines to learn even better and more independently than today. The overall goal is to increase automation within a very broad range of applications," says the professor.
Today, artificial intelligence is used almost everywhere and is already changing the way we live our daily lives. Not as Hollywood science fiction robots, but as computer technology that helps us solve current problems.
"Machine learning is basically about analysing data coming from specific problems with a target to solve these problems extremely well. And even though we have come a long way, artificial intelligence is still only in its infancy. We must find ways to solve machine learning problems far more efficiently and reliably and with far less processing power than today. This requires new contributions both at the theoretical and methodological sides," says Alexandros Iosifidis.
"Machine learning is used everywhere, and we’re reaping its benefits every day. It’s already so well integrated in our lives that we may not realize the extent of it. In 5-10-15 years, I believe that machine learning will have rearranged the way we think and act completely. This technology will help us in virtually every aspect of our lives."
Career and research
Alexandros Iosifidis was born and raised in Greece and came to Denmark as an assistant professor at Aarhus University in 2017. He has a MSc in computer engineering from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, and a PhD in computer science from the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and worked as a postdoc at Tampere University of Technology in Finland before he came to Denmark.
Today, Alexandros Iosifidis is heading the Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence research group at Aarhus University, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Machine Intelligence research area at the University’s Centre for Digitalisation, Big Data, and Data Analytics, DIGIT.
The Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence research group conducts research into how data processing models can learn efficiently in various complex environments. Together with engineering students, PhD students, researchers and project partners, the team is working to push the boundaries in teaching machines to solve complex problems.
The group's research has led to significant contributions to the area, e.g. new types of statistical machine learning models and new types of artificial neural networks and training methods.
