ITEA - ADVISOR, challenges within the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry

The ADVISOR project is a groundbreaking initiative focused on addressing the complex challenges within the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry, particularly in the context of seamless interoperability between various classes of AVs. These challenges stem from differences in capabilities, mission planning, and communication protocols among autonomous vehicles, resulting in fragmentation that impedes the efficient execution of surveillance tasks, such as offshore wind-turbine inspection.

The project aims to establish reliable communication between AVs and shore authorities, improve mission planning, and address the limitations of underwater communication through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) as communication gateways for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The ADVISOR project introduces a range of innovative elements that promise to advance AV technology and maritime operations. These innovations encompass safe and secure communication, automated inspection, robust operation in harsh environments, improved localization and navigation, automated charging, real-time data collection and analysis, enhanced connectivity, remote management, dynamic orchestration, decision-making tools, and simulation-based testing. By bringing together a consortium of leading experts in autonomous systems, mission planning, AV technology, maritime operations, and advanced communication systems, the project is poised to make a significant impact on the industry, offering solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce operational costs, improve security, and minimize environmental impact across various sectors.
