Networks and Analytics Laboratory

Networks and Analytics Laboratory (NAN Lab) is a research laboratory that addresses a broad spectrum of data communication technologies in challenging real-world setting. In NANLab we investigate topics within wireless communication, networking, network security, and data analytics. Our approach is driven by experiments combined with theoretical models to create exciting and insightful applications and new knowledge. We apply our research to various application domains including the Internet of Things, smart grid communication, as well as drone, and satellite communications.

Facilities

The laboratory is equipped with three 1U blade servers (8-12 CPU cores), two resilient RAID1 SSD disc systems, 2 GPU servers (32 cores), and 4 LAN switches (Cisco Catalysts 2960 and 3560-SX; 2 HP Aruba 2930F). In addition, we operate a UHF and S-band ground station with outdoor antennas and SDR-based radio front ends. The laboratory is climate controlled with cooling.

Currently, the laboratory hosts a few testbeds associated with specific project activities:

  • Industrial automation equipment from Beckhoff (an embedded controller CX2030, two BC9191 building controllers)
  • Radio communication test equipment (USRP testbed). The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) testbed for S-band communication (NI USRP 2920 and 2922)
  • Acoustic underwater communication testbed
  • Software-defined network for named-data network studies

The laboratory is equipped with instruments for wireless signal characterization, such as an oscilloscope, a spectrum analyser (6Hz), a signal generator, power supplies, and a 3D printer.

Special expertise

  • Communication system experimental design and implementation
  • Radio Frequency (RF) engineering and signal processing
  • Software-defined radio (SDR) experience with systems like USRP with MATLAB and GNU Radio
  • Communication protocol design and network security testing
  • Hardware and software design and prototyping
