The Danish power grid, built in the 1970s, now requires extensive maintenance. Energinet needs to replace 80% of grid components within 10 years, totaling over 300,000 units, to advance powerline capabilities and meet the expected fivefold increase in energy consumption by 2050. Current manual replacements are costly and require grid shutdowns, using helicopters, cranes, or powerline bicycles to access powerlines.
The Robots4Green project will develop (i) robotic tools for the SDU aerial vehicle to operate on energized powerlines and (ii) low-cost IoT multisensory units for line characteristics and grid behavior estimation. This system will replace current methods, allowing safe, cost-effective maintenance while the grid remains operational, and improving worker safety by delegating highrisk tasks to robots.
