Modern communication networks, in particular, wireless networks, create a gigantic measure of information at the system framework level and at the end-user level. The 5th generation of mobile networks promises higher data rates, ultra low latency and reliable communication as well as support for a massive machine type communication in the network. Our research in wireless communication networks ranges from the physical layer analysis to system-level optimizations and improvements. It covers: channel modelling, coding, antenna design, radio-frequency identification and energy efficiency.
The Internet has during the past decades been a strong driver for globalization and economic growth. Today, the Internet has transformed into a global worldwide distribution network for digital information. With the shift towards the Internet of Things we face challenges with the scalability of these networks as well as the constraints imposed by end-devices in terms of limited computing and , memory and energy budgets. We research in protocols and communication mechanisms for the Internet from the data link layer to the highest protocol stack layers, taking an application-inspired approach to basic research and innovation. The research topic covers: IP networking, routing, mobility, network security and privacy enforcement techniques as well as information centric-networks.
The amount of open satellite data for Earth observation has increased tremendously in the last decade, primarily as a result of the open data policies from ESA and NASA. In addition to the growing availability of data from large public space organizations, we are witnessing a rapid increase in the number of startups focusing on new space technologies, leading to unprecedented opportunities in accessing and using satellite data to solve the problems of tomorrow. Machine learning, and in particular deep learning, can efficiently combine the spatial, temporal, and spectral patterns in automated data analytics pipelines. Our research covers the entire pipeline, from download and preprocessing of the raw data to development and implementation of novel machine learning methods for advanced postprocessing steps. The topics covered are: Land cover classification (i.e. semantic segmentation), inpainting, decision support systems, and data fusion.
We are witnessing a convergence of four key technologies that are set to markedly alter the information and communications technology ecosystem. These technologies are 5th generation (5G) cellular, artificial intelligence, data analytics and the internet of things. Furthermore, there is an ongoing trend towards sharing of open data for big data analytics demanding efficient cloud computation techniques to scale up the data analysis. We are conducting research in machine learning algorithms for big data analytics in Internet of Things networks; self-optimized networks; autonomous distributed systems; collaborative communication systems; and cloud computing for scalable data analytics.
