Aftercare

Pilot Testing of A Mobile Application for Relapse Prevention to Alcohol and Cannabis Use Among Young Adults

The aim of the project is to develop and test the initial effectiveness of a mobile application (app) that can be used as an aftercare intervention for young adults (ages 18-30), who have received treatment for problematic alcohol and cannabis use. These young adults are at high-risk for relapsing to a problematic use of substances after discharge from structured treatment services. Therefore, the mobile app will assist in providing treatment continuity and relapse prevention.

A unique feature of the project is that the app will be carefully developed under the scope of an interdisciplinary approach. In the first project stage, we brought together researchers from the fields of substance use, human-computer-interaction (HCI), software engineering, and clinical psychology to develop an app in line with current research on relapse prevention with a state-of-the-art technical implementation. We will also involve young adults receiving outpatient treatment for substance use in the app development process in order to develop an app that is both engaging and clinically effective. The second stage of the project will consist of a pilot effectiveness clinical trial, testing the effects and usability of the app in outpatient treatment settings for substance use.

The mobile application is released on App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android)
